Novels

A trilogy of literary crime novels following Saoirse Kearney, an adopted young woman who discovers that she was born of a crime, and Orestes Theodorou, the Greek police officer who becomes her partner in SOS Investigations. Each book can be read on its own; each turns on something hidden beneath the surface.

Palimpsest

Some secrets refuse to stay buried.

“Palimpsest. A manuscript scraped clean and written over – though the original text, if you knew how to look, could still be read beneath the surface.”

A dead mother’s diary. Six Oxford friends and one Greek summer. A silence kept for nineteen years.

Saoirse Kearney is eighteen, adopted, and very good at keeping her life under control. Then a solicitor hands her a diary written by the birth mother who died soon after giving her up. Its pages lead back to the summer of 2005, to a villa on the Greek island of Lemnos and six Oxford friends who swore never to speak of what happened there.

When builders unearth human remains near the villa, Saoirse goes to Lemnos to find out who she really is. With Orestes Theodorou, a young officer with a personal reason to hate the six, she uncovers a crime, a death and two decades of lies – and begins to plan a reckoning of her own.

Pentimento

Pentimento - Paul Riddelll

Some truths are only painted over.

“Pentimento: the appearance or reappearance of earlier paintings, or parts of paintings, underlying the finished composition, showing that the artist has changed their mind during the work.”

– The Oxford Dictionary of Art

A girl under the paint. A dinner where two men died. A detective whose report was the perfect crime.

When an X-ray reveals a young woman’s face beneath a Cornish seascape, Saoirse and Orestes follow her to Enys Dhu, a tidal island where, in the summer of 1966, a model walked into the sea and an innocent woman went to prison.

Sixty-two years later, someone is restaging that night – using Saoirse’s own methods. And on Midsummer Eve, as she stands to tell the truth, the lights go out.

Shadowglass

Shadowglass - Paul Riddell

Beware what lies within.

“Shadowglass: a mirror on one side, a window on the other – for whoever is standing behind it.”

A minister who cannot remember. A spy novel that should not exist. A mirror with someone behind it.

When a British Defence minister wakes, drugged, in a West London brothel – surrounded by cameras and certain that his summit papers have been stolen – Saoirse and Orestes find nothing in his briefcase but a paperback spy novel whose hero is codenamed Shadowglass.

The codename leads them into a web of mirrors, forged art and political blackmail that stretches from post-war Tangier to the heart of the British establishment.
